Rebecca Derington - Sourcebottle
Rebecca is an experienced public relations and marketing strategist, as well as a qualified drama coach and workplace trainer. These skills have helped her get results for clients for more than 13 years.
Before pursuing a career in public relations and marketing, Rebecca practised as a lawyer (for about three minutes), but quickly realised she was more passionate about public relations and marketing. So, she started over - completing a business degree and working up to executive and senior management marketing, public relations and corporate communication roles in the services sector. And she never looked back.
After the birth of her first child, Rebecca started her own public relations firm, Wagging Tongues. It was then that she recognised a need for a service that gave journalists and bloggers an opportunity to ‘call out’ for sources. She knew PR professionals and businesses would also benefit, since both could feel more confident their ‘pitches’ would bring about the desired outcome: highly coveted publicity and media attention.
Just over two years ago, Rebecca decided to create this service and deliver it to everyone for free.

Here's what some of our attendees said about our last conference:

Meeting other Mumpreneurs was so inspiring in itself. Everyone has an entirely different story but everyone had one thing in common. Have a dream and go for it. Being a mumpreneur is not always easy but it can be sooo rewarding. Jayne Day

I learned to refocus, reassess my values, and prioritize. I came away from the weekend feeling supported, motivated, and cared for. Nicole Grant

Was ecstatic to be surrounded by so many beautiful, amazing, talented, strong women who all have a zest for life and humble courage to meet life's challenges head on. Every time we come together I am awestruck by how powerful women are, and for all the right reasons, prepared to fight for their children and other's, their families and other's, the environment, and most importantly for themselves, because without them the world would be a much poorer place spiritually. I'm glad and proud to be a woman and a part of C2M's! Sally Naughton

I have been to lots of conferences over the years and this would have to have been one of the best. Yes there were great speakers and I have many strategies to now go and implement but the feelings of support, generosity and encouragement were palpable at this conference. I will definitely be back. Dr Lucy Burns

Everything i do is for my family, nothing is for me.... I am so passionate about people and making others feel inspired and valued that I forget about myself. I think everyone in that room was just another version of me and I was astounded at the strength, honesty and passion that everyone had
for what they were doing but also for each other. It is so common in day to day life that others feel insecure/petty/unnoticed and are ready and willing to shut you down but not one of the connect 2 mums girls made me feel that way and I LOVED IT.
  Lana Purcell

I enjoyed meeting everyone! There wasn't a single person that I met at the conference that I didn't learn from, and will probably continue to learn from as time passes.

What did I enjoy most? The instant rapport, the wealth of knowledge, the amazing and humbling stories of overcoming adversity to achieve, the laughter, the openness, the warmth and acceptance, and the common bond that we all had of being mums and business people that seemed just make us all "gel".
Tanya Love

I loved everything about the conference. All of the speakers were awesome and I have once again learnt so much that will help me and my business jump it to the next level.

I am all fired up !!!

The love and hugs that I received from old and new friends made me feel so special. I felt validated, supported, nurtured, cared for, educated and the list goes on.......

Mumpreneur Monday: Who are you anyway? by Tanya Love

It seems that there are always request for “those” shots.  You know the ones of YOU.  Eek! Whether it be for a blog feature, a magazine article or a profile on the latest hot business-related website.  People love to see the face BEHIND the business.  The designer.  The manager.  The person sending out all of those emails.

The Mumpreneur, in the flesh!

So, how do we make the best of these opportunities?  How do we avoid the typical, “sitting in front of a black backdrop corporate-type” shots?

How do you portray, just one image, who you are, what you are about, and why it is that you love what you do?

Well, here are my tips:

1.       Sit down and have a think BEFORE the shoot.  This might seem obvious but I am not meaning to “think” in the conventional “what colours do I wear?” type of thing.  I mean ask yourself questions like “what makes me tick?”, “what do I want people to know about me?”, “what do I want people to know about my family?”

2.       Find yourself a photographer that cares about you, and your brand.  It doesn’t need to be a professional.  Just a person with a good eye, and the ability to set you at ease.  Sometimesthis WILL be a professional, or it may just be your next door neighbour.

3.       Choose a location with great NATURAL light.  There is no need to make this more complicated than it needs to be.  Make sure you shoot at a time of day when the light in your chosen location is at its optimum.

4.       Set the scene with items that answer the questions you asked yourself up at:

Tip #1.  Surround yourself with things that tell the story of YOU.  It could be your kids, your garden, your products, your favourite chair, or even the spot where you “create” ie. your studio or your workstation, or even your laptop on your knee in the backyard as you watch the  kids playing in the sandpit.

5.       Get in close.  That is the golden rule.  Everything CLOSE.  Your kids, your face, your products, make sure it all fills the frame.  Yes, you want people to see the “scene” that you have set, but those aspects are just to create the atmosphere around you.  It doesn’t matter if they are partially cropped or intentionally blurred out of focus, as long as they are “there”, and as long as the resulting image one that shows the viewer just who you are, which isn’t just a small little dot in the middle of some cool landscape somewhere.

6.       Look your best.  This isn’t purely for vanity either!  Sure we want people to see us looking great, but we all know that when we look great, we feel great too!  Spend a little extra time “preening”yourself for your shoot so that you can relax and enjoy the experience rather than worrying that your bra strap is showing or your teeth are looking yellow from all of those late night coffees!

7.       If you still feel nervous and/or self-conscious, make your photos “doing” shots.  That is, prepare an activity for you to do in the shots to distract yourself from the “everybody say cheese” thing that we all fear and loathe!  Do you love to bake with your family?  Why not some shots of you having fun together in the kitchen?  Reading a book to your kids?  Sitting at the helm of your empire banging away on the laptop!  “Doing” photos are much more fun to do (and more interesting for the viewer too!), then contrived “sitting and smiling” shots anyways!

8.       Have fun with it and relax, let the inner you shine through, so that the masses can see what a great person, and businesswoman you are! And those are my top tips to revealing who you are when you finally decide to share the face of your business with the world!

You can choose to take all of the above and file under “V” for “very important stuff to remember”, or you could attend the Connect2Mums Mumpreneur Conference!  Attendees will have the opportunity to be photographed in all of their finery, by yours truly.  We will all be arriving coiffed and styled, manicured and made up, and poured into the latest in high fashion couture for the gala event.  Well, maybe not, but you should all be looking forward to a night out of the PJs and into something a bit less comfortable, and so why not take advantage of it? Hope to meet you there!

Mumpreneur Monday: Getting the most out of Conferences by Catherine Oehlman

Are you coming along to the Connect2Mums Conference in a few weeks time? (I hope so!) For most of us as mothers, getting to a conference requires a lot of organisation. We need to arrange for someone to take care of our kids, and leave things in order on the home front. Some mums even have to prepare meals in advance! So after all that effort, you want to make sure the weekend will be worthwhile. Here are ten easy tips to help you get the most out of the conference:

1. Have a 30 second introduction prepared. It just needs to summarise who you are and what you do in a friendly way.
2. Have a 1-3min spiel ready too! If your 30 second intro is well received you may be asked to share more about what makes you and your biz unique.
3. Think about who you want to connect with before you get there. Make sure you know their first name and the name of their biz. Use social media sites to help you recognise contacts you are yet to meet IRL. (On that note, make sure your own social media profile pics are nice clear images of your face so that others can recognise you too! Don’t put up a glamour shot unless you plan on being glamorously made up all weekend...)
4. Ask questions even if you think they are silly. You probably won’t look silly at all, but IF you do – isn’t it better to look silly for a few seconds than stay silly for months, or years, still not knowing the answer?!
5. Take notes. Don’t tell yourself you’ll remember later – you probably won’t.
6. Don’t put yourself down, or talk yourself up too much. Neither will help you to engage meaningfully with new contacts.
7. Take lots of business cards. If you’re just starting out, make up some free ones online with your basic contact details.
8. Give. Come ready to give to others, and you’re sure to get a whole lot back in return. Give information, give offers of help, give ideas, give encouragement, give a smile!
9. Wear clothes and shoes that make you feel confident, but are still comfortable. Nothing worse than being so distracted by your aching feet that you can’t concentrate.
10. Relax and enjoy yourself. Your kids are being lovingly cared for, so allow yourself this time for personal growth and a little fun!

What would you add at #11? Anything I missed...? See you there Mumpreneurs!

Mumpreneurs Conference Presenter: Susan Pearse

Author Susan Pearse is evangelical about improving minds – and not just her own. It’s a fact that her husband and two young toddlers will attest to, having lived and breathed the advice that Susan, along with fellow author Martina Sheehan, has made her life’s work.

The Brisbane-based author is one of a small number of experts bringing the science of neuroplasticity –literally changing the way you think – to Australia. Using scientific know how and drawing on her own personal experience, Susan specialises in translating the theory that explains how our minds change into simple, practical tools which can be applied to everyday situations – from parenting techniques to personal relationships.

As a working mother and entrepreneur, Susan understands better than most the challenges of juggling a busy career while still maintaining a rewarding and fulfilling family life – and the importance of taking timeout to reconnect with your partner, children and yourself on a daily basis.

“So many couples get caught up in their individual routines and forget to appreciate one another – fromthere it becomes all too easy to fixate on the negatives in a relationship. Cultivating your own mindsetso you think positively about your partner and recognize and avoid the signposts which lead to negativeattitudes and behaviours is actually very simple – it just requires a little awareness.

“Likewise, the way you interact with your children – even before birth – is all in the mind. Just a fewsimple mental exercises practiced on a regular basis can make all the difference in producing resilient,emotionally-balanced and happy children.

”Susan was born in Mackay in 1972 and moved to Brisbane to undertake a business degree at QUT.While her background is in consulting and facilitating organisational change, it wasn’t until meeting fellowmind fitness fanatic Martina Sheehan a decade ago that Susan began practicing techniques for training hermind and discovered where her real passion lay.

This new direction ultimately led to the creation of a highly successful consultancy business Reinvention, established in partnership with Sheehan in 2001. Reinvention has a reputation of transforming leaders, organizations and teams with ground-breaking brain based development programs.

It was through Reinvention’s involvement with the Mind and Life Institute and His Holiness the Dalai Lama that the pair became fascinated with the science of neuroplasticity – the concept that the humanbrain changes form and output over time and that individuals can cultivate their minds to improveperformance, increase happiness levels and ultimately change their lives.

Through their latest joint entrepreneurial endeavor, Mind Gardener®, Susan translates this science intoa series of step-by-step guides designed to help people through various stages of their lives. In fact, thehugely popular Bump to Baby Guide was written by Susan during her first pregnancy – and she practicedit religiously during her second a year later.

“I’m a firm believer in practicing what I preach – not only do my long-suffering family function as MindGardener’s official ‘field testers’, but I myself dedicate at least 20 minutes every day to exercising mymind. The beauty of it is that the exercises are seamlessly integrated into my daily routine – after morethan a decade of practice, it’s become as habitual as brushing my teeth.”

Susan enjoys days at the beach with her family and experimenting in the kitchen. She’s also busypracticing the mind exercises which will feature in Mind Gardener’s forthcoming range of guidesincluding the sought-after parenting guide.

Susan is presenting the following topics at the Mumpreneurs Conference

Setting Goals

Why does setting goals make such a difference to your motivation? By revealing simple and fascinating facts about your brain, we explain why having goals can make all the difference to your performance.

We are wired for complacency and distraction. Let’s face it, we regularly cook the same tried and tested meals, and we can’t help but check that new email no matter how busy we are! This session will make you more aware of your brain and the traps it lays for you every day. With new knowledge and practical exercises on setting and achieving goals, the future is yours for the taking.

Common Traps in Business

Yes, there is a lot to learn when starting or running your own business. But no matter how much others tell you or show you, you are bound to blaze a new trail. This session will arm you with the tools to recognise the common mindset traps that can trip up even the most well prepared or experienced person.

The business world is based on rational thinking…or so you thought! Evidence shows that biases, preferences and strange mindsets litter our decision-making and mostly go unrecognised. We will enlighten you to these traps and provide you with practical tools so you can catch them before they catch you.

Catherine Oehlman is a teacher, writer, blogger, emerging mumpreneur and most importantly mother to two great kids.  Catherine majored in music in her Bachelor of Education (Primary) but found her focus drawn to literacy when teaching in the early childhood, upper primary and library classrooms of Australia and the UK. In 2006 Cath left the career she adored and took on her most challenging role to date – as a mother.  While adjusting to life
as a mum herself, she dabbled in writing articles for other mothers before starting her own blog late in 2008.

By mid 2009 Catherine was receiving recognition for her blog at http://squigglemum.com.  She made the Top 100 Australian Women bloggers list and followed this up by winning the Connect2Mums Top Parenting Site Award.  At the Connect2Mums conference and awards night she then took out the honours as Top AusMumpreneur 2009.

Catherine is a prolific writer online.  She is a staff blogger for Parenting Australia and has written over fifty articles for the site.  She regularly guest posts on a number of popular Australian parenting blogs and enjoys encouraging other mothers in their parenting journey.  As a literacy specialist Cath also contributes articles on children’s reading, writing and communication skills to the online publication Literacy Lava.  At Connect2Mums she writes the Connect2Bloggers column, sharing her knowledge of blogging, wordpress, online etiquette and tips for navigating the blogosphere.  As a result of her blogging, Catherine is often asked to comment on current issues for parenting and lifestyle magazines, and has also been interviewed for national radio.

Cath leads a busy life offline as well.  She is passionate about equipping Christian women in their role as mothers, and coordinates a MOPS (Mothers Of Pre Schoolers) Group in Brisbane.  She regularly writes for MOPS Australia and maintains the MOPS Australia
site and forum.  In addition to speaking at other MOPS groups, Cath has run electives on writing and blogging at the last two Queensland conferences.  In 2010 she has been asked to lead the Worship Team and also present an elective about online issues at the MOPS Australasian Conference.  Catherine’s words of encouragement are regularly featured in Footprints Magazine for Christian Women.

When it comes to writing though, picture books remain Cath’s first love.  On weekends she continues to work on picture book manuscripts which you will one day find on the shelves at bookstores and libraries.  That is, unless Cath lands a gig as a Playschool presenter...

Squigglemum.com is an inspirational parenting blog combining a mother’s heart and teacher’s mind with a writer’s hand.  Catherine Oehlman draws on her expertise as a primary school teacher while raising her own two young children, and shares ideas for other parents as she goes.  She has particular interests in literacy, outdoor education and faith based parenting.

and publications.

The Online You
We are all spending more and more time online particularly in social media spaces.  We tweet, we blog, we update facebook pages and participate in virtual discussions.  For business reasons, personal reasons, or both, many of us live online almost as much as we live offline.  And whether we realise it or not, every update, tweet and comment contributes to our online persona.

So who are you online?

In this workshop Catherine Oehlman (AusMumpreneur 2009, http://squigglemum.com) will walk you through a health check for The Online You.  Drawing from her experience as a blogger and success in the social media space, Cath will help you to identify who you are online, where you are spending your online time and what you are communicating to your readers.  She will also help you to recognise which online spaces will work best for you.  In addition to your health check Catherine will share some tips on building a strong and consistent profile, and also some must-know etiquette for navigating the various social media spaces.  If you spend time in the online world, you won’t want to miss Cath’s workshop on The Online You.

Mumpreneurs Conference Presenter: Terri Cook

Introducing Terri Cook of The Success Zone

Terri has always had entrepreneurial blood running through her veins. Growing up in a family who were business owners, Terri grew up witnessing first hand, the inner workings of business. The successes, the not so successful times, the full workings from start up to a fully fledged business. With that kind of training ground within a number of industries including the family Real Estate business, Terri moved through University to complete 3 degrees before returning to real estate herself and then into recruitment. After 7 ½ years running a recruitment agency in the CBD of Brisbane, Terri moved full time into her own coaching practice and has been running her successful business from home for the last 8 years. Terri has a strong understanding of what it takes to run a successful business from home – having made all the mistakes herself she has the ability to show her clients what not to do and how to do things in the correct order. “I got clients right away as a life coach, when I began my own business – what I didn’t do was set everything up from the start properly – I ran at it like a bull at a gate and well quite frankly created this unholy mess where I had too many clients, no time to do anything, no time for my life outside my work, no business plan and no support. That’s where I made my first mistake. So in short things kind of imploded when a family member got sick and I really had to sit back and look at what I was creating. Why had I gone into business for myself??? What did I really want?? I WANTED IT TO BE FABULOUS!!!

So I set about organising some new goals for myself – I took on my own Coach again and reworked my goals, my hours and reclaimed my life and my business. My Priority was to be there for my kids and to create a business that allowed me to do so. That was my major goal – STILL IS!!! That’s what I focus on with my clients – showing them how to set up their businesses so that they can Re-claim their lives, their businesses and BE FABULOUS!!!! I focus on showing my clients how to set your goals, set your work and home life boundaries, your niche, how to speak to your niche in a way that they will understand and so much more.
In short we focus on creating a business to attract all the clients you want so you can earn the income you want and reclaim your life – You running your business rather than your business running you!!!

Mindset is another area of great importance in business and a key component of business success. I use the rules of the laws of attraction and action, NLP and cutting edge coaching techniques to show you have to have all the clients you want, earning the income you truly desire and have the life style that you dream about.

Terri will be presenting the following Workshop at the Mumpreneurs Conference

HOW TO grow your business and be FABULOUS AT THE SAME TIME. This workshop will focus on Re-claiming your Life and Business through marketing and mindset –

Attract ALL THE CLIENTS YOU WANT AND Re-claim your FABULOUSITY!!!!

We will go through the 7 steps you need to be truly FABULOUS AND GROW YOUR BUSINESS AT A RAPID RATE!!!!! Both online and offline!!
