Featured Mumpreneur: Melissa Haggerty of Fab Fit Pantyhose
You’re not the only one! But now there is a solution!
Melissa Haggerty is the creator of Fab Fit Pantyhose. She spent years searching for tights that would look stylish and feel comfortable all day long. Every product she tried let her down so she decided to design her own! She wanted pantyhose that were extra long in the body with a soft but firm elastic top to make sure they stay in place and don’t roll down when you walk or sit. They had to be completely opaque to look and feel sexy so she made them 100 denier. The main thing is she wanted a smooth, flattering silhouette under a fitted dress but without having to squeeze into shapewear.
Fab Fit Pantyhose are the answer. They are unlike anything else on the market because they give that smooth line we all want but without feeling like we’ve got a boa constrictor wrapped around us! Let’s face it, we don’t need to try to squash our bodies into uncomfortable “shapewear” that makes us feel unsexy and uncomfortable. We want a smooth look and to feel comfortable.
Melissa has a Marketing background but had never designed or manufactured her own product before. She had to specify her design, have a pattern created, find and brief a reliable Australian manufacturer and then ensure the final product met her high standard of design and quality. She then had to work out what to call her product and develop costeffective but attractive packaging and distribution of her Fab Fit Pantyhose.
Melissa took her idea from concept to reality in less than a year...while working full-time! She said “I had a few different product ideas and I knew I wanted to create my own business but I didn’t quite know how to get started. I met with a business coach who helped me figure out what I needed to do and then I did it. I didn’t want to give up my job because I still had to pay the bills plus I needed to prove that my idea would work.”
I’m now working on expanding the range to include footless tights and different colour options. It’s great working on my own business idea instead of just working on great ideas for my clients! My goal is to continue to grow the business and to become the number one high waisted pantyhose and tights brand in Australia. Fab Fit Pantyhose launched on Channel Ten’s The Circle and had a great response. The hosts even tried them and loved them!
You can now buy Fab Fit Pantyhose online from the website www.fabfitpantyhose.com.au They come in packs of two so you’ve always got one to wear while the other is in the wash! Melissa is offering members of Connect2Mums a special promotion price of $29.95 for two pairs - that’s $10 off the normal price. On checkout, use the promotion code 'Connect2Mums'

Friday Feature Mumpreneur
I didn't set out to start a company. I set out to fix my family. Okay that’s a bit harsh, I set out to train my family on how to reuse a cup they were already using. I was sick of seeing cups scattered throughout the house, on the coffee table, on the kitchen counter and no one claimed any of them. After several ineffective behavioral schemes and unsuccessful internet searches I broke down and designed what was not available and ended up with the MyColourCup Yeah, I definitely know which cup is mine!
Twist-id Products is now a fully incorporated company and has been selling the MyColourCup online since the beginning of 2010. The MyColourCup is a registered Australian trademark. I also have been granted a Australian innovative patent for the cups design. It’s taken over a year to get to this point but it was well worth it. When I first started thinking about solving this problem I told myself it would be fun and I needed a change in my life. I had a lot of growing to do both on the personal and intellectual level. I have read several books on motivation just to get me started and keep me going. The one theme that I pulled out of all that I have read is that you need a vision so that you have an engrained image to focus on and a path to go down. Arnold Schwarzenegger has done this several times from bodybuilder, to actor, to politician.
I don’t think I choose this business it choose me. I like creating things from scratch and creating a product is a bit like raising a child and my four kids have give me plenty of experience every day.

What is a mumpreneur exactly?
Actually I looked for the definition of Mumpreneur in Wikipedia the other day and there was nothing, zip, zero, zilch!! Puzzled by this I decided to ask others what they thought a Mumpreneur was and it seems plenty of people knew exactly what it was and were more than happy to share their definition of what a Mumpreneur is! Here are some of our favourites:
An entrepreneur who happens to be a mum!
Louise Deed www.scamps.co.nz
A visionary who is capable of anything she wants in life and goes after it despite lack of sleep, toy cars in her handbag, stickers on her computer monitor and crayon marks on her latest marketing proposal!
Kristy Rackham www.headspacebook.com
For me, being a Mumpreneur is someone who has the ability to find that happy medium between your family life and work life without having to choose between one or the other.
Louisa McCole www.acompany.com.au
A mum that loves what they do as a business but have the knowledge to multi-task the butt off it with kids, house and business and making it work!!
Nicole Lothian www.sosonsiteadmin.com.au
Mumpreneur – A multitasking woman who actively manages balance sheets and bed sheets, bibs and banking, bottom lines and bottoms, to achieve success as both primary family carer and business owner and operator.
Simone Caddell www.tinytutus.com.au
A Mumpreneur is a resourceful woman who through need, desire or other circumstances is (often) trying something new in business.
Deborah Davey www.etsy.com/shop/dspdavey
A master in multitasking, she is highly motivated, extremely resilient, yet loving and gentle with her children.
She stays up late at night to do her work, she gets up during the night to attend to her children.
She's an allrounder - marketing, accounting, design, HR, but also a master chef, a shopping expert, a nanny, a drop off service, a teachers aid.
Does anybody know another job that incorporates all these different aspects?
Ute Lorch www.mumcho.co.nz
A mum (obviously!) who has decided to go against the safe route of a usually guaranteed income and leave the workforce to pursue something she is passionate about. She uses the skills she has gained and enhanced through being a mum (budgeting, organising, delegating, problem solving, relationships) in her business, and has the goal of making an income from it.
Rebekah Lehman Cook http://blog.parentrooms.com.au/
A Mumpreneur is a woman who wants and needs to be business orientated, who needs and loves the stimulation running a business can give (if you are that way inclined) and a Mumpreneur still juggles her days to ensure her children (maybe not always) but majority of the time always come first. I love my children and my 4 stepchildren with all my heart but I have always admitted I am a mum that needs to work, and I am not ashamed of that.
Megan Waters www.serenebeauty.com.au
I would define a Mumpreneur as someone who is savvy and passionate about what they want to achieve, creative, nurturing with fabulous ideas and dreams together with the determination to say out loud that they want to achieve this dream. All the while having the patience and organizational skills to successfully run a family home and keep the kids entertained without running herself into the ground in the process.
Nicole Moss www.tobyandnic.com.au
I'm Jen and I'm a Mumpreneur... which for me means combining parenting and my business in a complementary way.
I work with so many women who are caught in the double bind of wanting to continue their careers; while also longing to spend more time with their young families. Becoming a Mumpreneur has really enabled me to achieve both.
Jen Dalitz www.sphinxx.com.au
I believe a Mumpreneur is someone who has created a business from the ground up. They have taken a vision and believed in themselves and their abilities and taken the risk to give it a go. It certainly takes patience and strength of character to stay focused while also maintaining your commitment to your most important job, motherhood.
Holly de Manincor www.bindababyessentials.com
A Mumpreneur is a self-employed mother. A mother who, despite having a family to care for, has decided to further her career in her chosen field and has managed to successfully juggle all the demands that come with being a working mother. Mumpreneurs rule!
Melissa Williscroft www.mjsvirtual.com.au
A Mumpreneur is be a part time entrepreneur whose priority remains with her family. One who walks the tightrope of business/home life with great care, someone who constantly reflects on her priorities, is flexible and yet focused.
Heather Greer www.naturalbirth.net.au
A Mumpreneur is no different to ANY entrepreneur - a person who identifies an opportunity and then takes action to pursue it - Being a parent just makes for a more challenging experience and different thoughts in terms of willingness to take risks.
Michelle Green www.threesweeties.com.au
To me a Mumpreneur is an amazing woman who shouldn't be underestimated!
Helen Butler www.clutterrescue.com.au
So there you go a Mumpreneur is many things – a mother, an entrepreneur, a businesswoman and a multi-taker! How would you define a mumpreneur?

Mumpreneur Monday ~Starting a Business with a Baby
Starting a Business with a Baby
The first few weeks with a new baby are filled with fear and questions, but then you relax into parenthood and start to think about the future. Becoming a solo business owner is the perfect way to combine parenting and acting on that great business idea.
Like many soloists I started my business to fit in with a change in circumstances – the birth of my son in May 2006. Before then I was freelancing and working full-time. When I finished my contract and was faced with finding work around being a mum, I decided freelancing from home was the best solution – and I didn’t have to put up with any more office politics!
My solution worked well for me, however I am lucky to have parents who were willing to look after my son for a day each a week. As my business grew I knew I needed more than two days to work and investigated childcare options. My son, who is now nearly three, happily goes to “school” two days a week, as well as looks forward to his days with “Granny and Poppy” and “Pa and Nanny”. My husband and I agreed I would limit working at evenings and weekends so we could spend time together as a family, but I know many successful business parents who wait until their children are asleep and then start work. My point is that being a solopreneur means you can work to suit yourself.
As I started a business that needed very little initial investment, I didn’t have to budget costs. I already had a computer, pens, notepads, phone and a car and needed nothing else when I started out. The same went for getting advice from business advisers, accountants or solicitors, but I did need to check whether I had to register for GST (I wasn’t earning enough!). Initially operating under my own name, I decided last year I wanted a “proper” business and so registered a business name, commissioned a designer for a logo and business cards and set up a website. I haven’t looked back since and can now afford to be picky about the work I take on.
However, I did learn some valuable lessons as I navigated being a business owner and mum at the same time.
- Young babies never sleep for as long as you’d like them to so you can finish that important project;
- Putting clients first means it is inevitable that you will need to work some nights or weekends because there are always days that don’t go to plan, especially when children are involved;
- Be careful about saying “yes” to every project that comes your way when starting out because not every client is right for you or your business;
- Factor in time to get out and speak to other business owners, both parents and non-parents, so you can share experiences – both professional and those that involve mashed vegetables.
- Never beg a child to go to sleep so you can work – they sense desperation and feed off it.
- If you have to work while your child/ren is with you, let them play where you can still see them from your office/desk/corner of the dining table or take advantage of hour-long DVDs.
