My name is Lizzie, I am a work from home mum with two very busy todddlers under my feet. I studied Graphic Design at University of Canberra before my role as a mummy – and like most creative women, I have made ‘things’ my whole life.

I opened Craft Makes Me Happy in July 2011 after many months of thought and planning. The business has gone from strength to strength and is definitely evolving over time. Originally I only stocked vintage supplies, but have now sourced some very delightful items from overseas to use on all sorts of projects. Craft does absolutely and definitely make me happy, and as my babies are becoming toddlers, I am finding more time to create, which is my true passion. Hi, I’m Bec Gange, owner of Pretty Well Covered – stylish and discreet breastfeeding coverlets. I’m a WAHM to two gorgeous boys. I’m a trained teacher and left my teaching career when my first child was due.

When he was born in July 2007, I began breastfeeding. I struggled in the first few weeks and nearly gave up, but I needed and wanted to continue. I had many bouts of mastitis but fought to keep feeding. I found a surprising passion for breastfeeding that I hadn’t expected to have.

Pretty Well Covered was launched in 2008 by a close friend of mine. As a mum of three breastfeeding her third child, she saw the need for a stylish and practical breastfeeding cover. I’ve been operating Pretty Well Covered since December 2010. The business continues to grow within Australia and internationally. We have friends in 15 countries around the world, and have sold our coverlets in throughout Australia and in the Philippines, Canada, the UK and New Zealand.

Our coverlets are popular because they are a fashionable alternative to wearing a blanket, wrap or nursing apron while feeding. The over-the-head coverlet has no clips, buttons or ties, making it so simple to use. With its sheer fabric it provides coverage for discreet breastfeeding which keeps you cool and comfortable. It’s easy to use, easy to store, and can also be used as a pregnancy poncho, pram cover or baby wrap. Our coverlets are available in 5 colours – purple, teal, vintage rose, coral stripe, and black/white stripe (new stock of latter 3 colours arriving in Jan 2012).

I’m passionate about breastfeeding, and passionate about giving mothers the ability to choose whether covering is right for them and their baby. I don’t believe that mothers should have to cover; but as a breastfeeding mum I chose to cover. I didn’t want my post-baby tummy and sides on display!

Wearing a coverlet doesn’t remove the boding moments that breastfeeding can bring – you can still maintain eye contact with your baby. I’m blessed to have a great husband who works hard so I can be at home with my boys. I’m very thankful that I have the best of both worlds – the ability to be a stay at home mum, and the ability to run a business I love! Beautiful Fairy is named after my sister in law and businesspartner Louise’s first child Ella. Ella was born sleeping at 21 weeks. A friendwho had lost her daughter suggested to Louise that she try digital scrapbookingto help her through the grieving process. When Louise lost her second childJames as a result of a cord accident at 38 weeks, digital scrapbooking becamean important tool for sharing her baby boy with us. During the year followingJames’ birth, Louise worked on her memory album while I created a pregnancyalbum of my second child. We shared our digital creations through email andonline chat. Our albums became more than just a collection of happy snaps- theywere a powerful medium for sharing our hopes, dreams and fears. It was duringthis time that we began discussing the idea of creating premium albums forothers who did not have the time to make their own.

Our business beginnings may seem very sad, but to us it justseemed natural to honour the children and the role they had in creating apassion in both of us and helping us form a very strong friendship. We have aperspective that others perhaps do not have, and believe very strongly in themagic to be found in everyday life. The years of your life spent raisingchildren are very intense, and stressful, and at times it is hard to stop andtake it all in. We hope to help people pause and reflect on their lives and takein all the amazing everyday moments.

I also have an honours degree in history, and have spentcountless hours in archives looking over accounts, letters and diaries fromeveryday people. Every single word was crucial to me and my research. I reallynotice how much of our lives are not being recorded. People keep blogs, notdiaries, they IM or email instead of writing a letter. Our lives are digitallyrecorded. Closing a Facebook account or a hard drive failure can mean everymemory you have is lost. This obsession to record our lives for posterity is amassive driver for us. We have an information pack for interested people and alongwith product information we include sheets with ideas for recording memories. Ifsomeone cannot go ahead with an album, our hope is that they will still takethe time to make notes and back up their photos.

Beautiful Fairy has been running as a business for about 18months now. I began putting the basic administrative side of the businesstogether as Louise worked her way through her first six weeks of motherhoodwith her beautiful daughter Chloe. Working on it every day is an absolute joy.We love our work. We love the challenge of creating something bigger from our‘hobby’. We also thrive on the role we have as memory keepers. When someonelooks at our work, contacts us and hands over their most treasured memories,asking us to create a keepsake for them... it is an honour and a privilege thatwe take very seriously.

What inspired you to open Pass It Forward Gifts?It was in my ‘dream book’ for a couple of years, which was filled with all the things I really wanted to do in my life. I had a career in marketing but felt unfulfilled in the corporate world, I wanted to make a difference and do something inspiring with my time. Around the corner from 40 I felt it was the right time to make Pass it Forward Gifts a reality and just went for it one day! It felt right. I’ve always been a compassionate person and volunteer and tried to help whoever I can, wherever I can. It’s a value deeply ingrained in me. I truly believe generosity is the key to a better world.

How difficult was it to get your vision for Pass It Forward Gifts in progress and up and running?

It was an enormous effort and there were many, many evenings where I only slept a couple of hours; keen to get the site online and launched as quickly as possible. I took all my savings and with the support of my family, friends and business partners my dream materialized on December 1, 2010 when the website was launched. When you are running your own business, especially something you are emotionally attached to, there is no switching off. Your mind is constantly thinking about how to make it better and what more you can do. As hard as I worked in my corporate career, it rarely kept me awake at night.

How did you choose which 4 charities to support?It was not easy let me tell you! I went to hundreds of websites and registered charity lists and read and read until I kept coming back to these four – I was also listening very closely to my heart. I’ve admired and supported many charities over the years, sponsored children from around the world and volunteered my time to raise funds for major charitable organisations. But these ones felt right for my site.

It was the people involved in them and the fact that these charities were not as well known, yet did so much to help thousands of Australians every day in practical, positive ways. Because they are low overhead operations with lots of volunteers and little funding I wanted to support them by generating awareness as well as passing on donations on an ongoing basis. Most of what these charities receive truly does go to the people who need it, and quickly!

What does being a woman mean to you?Being a woman, I am governed by my heart and intuition – especially as I grow older. Pass it Forward Gifts feels right for me and regardless of the outcome I am proud that I have done it! Women are resilient and can do anything, in fact in tough times we are resourceful and find the people and means to pull us through. We are nurturers, want to live positive lives and be good role models – to create a better future and kinder generations. I know I want to be remembered fondly.

Little Treasures is the new kid on the block (pun intended) of online baby boutiques. It was only in February this year that owner, Regan Flegler, decided to take on the role of Work At Home Mum and enjoy the benefits that such a position affords; there’s no commute, overheads are low, and you don’t need to take time off for sick kids.

During the last six months between and inception and launch Regan says she learnt a great deal about the Australian baby goods market. On a trip to Sydney to visit theKids InStyle Tradeshow she and husband David were met with a great deal of eye-rolling. Apparently not everybody was happy about the creation of yet “another online baby store”. Not the most enthusiastic of starts for a starry-eyed newbie in the WAHM world. However, Regan was confident that Little Treasures wasn’t going to be just another online baby store but the BEST online baby store.

So how do you make that transition from same but different... to just different?

Regan wanted the website to be a handbook for new Mums , experienced Mums, Dads and Grandparents. Somewhere they could turn to not just to buy gorgeous baby goods, but for information to help them through the rocky road of parenting.

The Little Treasures blog helps deliver key pieces of information to Mums and Dads. Like the foods to avoid during pregnancy, why you shouldn’t wear sparkly maternity tops to the hospital and most importantly why you’re never alone as a new Mum. The blog was started before the website was up and running out of a genuine need to help others. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Regan likes to talk... just ask her, she’ll tell you herself!

So what else makes Little Treasures different? A market first lay-by facility one of the largest baby product catalogues in the market and the range of eco-friendly products for sale has to be seen to be believed! In addition, if Little Treasures don’t stock the product you are after, they will do their best to get it! All you have to do is ask.

This may be because your child is uncomfortable on flooring surfaces.

Did you know that babies are not born with kneecaps, in their delicate knees?
As such, if you x ray an infants’ knees they do not show up the same as a big kid or adult; due to the fact that at birth, a baby's kneecaps are still just cartillage. The cartillage eventually develops into kneecaps as we know and love them. However, your baby and toddler will have to take a few spills while learning to crawl and walk in the growth phase. From the time your baby is somewhere between 3 to 5 years old, your baby will grow kneecaps, as big kids and adults have. Through this process, the child may have some discomfort moving around on modern floor surfaces and show the signs of minor bruising and abrasions. Many babies just choose not to crawl and this can lead to long term affects in other important developmental stages.
Through the crawling stage, your baby actually falls on cartillage that acts like a "sponge- compressor" to protect the developing kneecap. Most babies will find crawling fun and easy, but will often have red, sore, and bruised knees due to the floor surfaces and pulling up and falling down of the learning to crawl stages. Having the benefit of kneepad protection allows your baby to crawl in comfort and learn to walk or pull up and push a toddling bike, in safety and comfort. This developmental stage also has immeasurable benefits for co-ordination and right and left brain functions for use later in life. Helping your child to play and explore in comfort is a fun time for both child and parent.

Last week was tough. We had a long list of things to do. Except they weren’t on a list yet they were all floating around as ideas and things to remember in our head. Some were urgent, some were essential, some weren’t. There’s two of us so most times this is a good thing. That is unless both of us are feeling overwhelmed, then its double the intensity.
We rely on lists and planning a lot, our business is expanding all the time so we need to keep track of everything going on, especially when its busy.

Normally we write a ‘to do’ list and divide the jobs up but we were both a little fragile and needed to go easy on ourselves. I’m glad we can recognise and acknowledge that in ourselves, rather than getting frustrated and beating ourselves up. So there was no to-do list last week.

Instead we made a pot of tea and wrote a wishlist. We jotted down everything we had floating around in our heads. The urgent, the not so urgent, the big, the little, the now, the later, the really very much later and only if we can figure out how to do it and have time. And because it was a wishlist we even added some little stars to it. There was no anxiety tied up to it that these were things that had to be done, straight away and somehow it felt a lot better than writing a boring to-do list.

After that we scheduled the ones we really had to do first into a weekly planner (a way better idea than trying to get everything done in one day). It took us about half an hour but then we were organised for the whole rest of the week and know exactly what needs to be done and what other things we can do if we have time!

I’m feeling so much more enthusiastic this week and not overwhelmed at all. The wishlist already has lots of lovely ticks on it now too where we’ve granted ourselves the wishes! I definitely think you should try it, if 'overwhelm' comes to visit you.

The top ten tips for writing a winning awards submission!

Getting started is often the hardest part of any task but once you do make a start the task always seems to get easier. Below are some ideas that I hope you will find useful to help you with completing your submission.
1. Arrange a time to phone or catch up with a friend. Discuss the questions you have to answer in your submission, and ask them for their thoughts and ideas about you. Sometimes people see something extraordinary in us that we take for granted! Jot down their ideas. These are people who believe in you and it is a great way to get ideas flowing for your submission.

2. Keep a notebook and pen handy (in your handbag, on the bedside table). As you experience the daily challenges and successes in your business, jot down the thoughts you have that might be able to help you with your submission.

3. Be proud of your business and don’t be afraid to talk yourself up, nominating yourself shows that you have confidence in your ability and believe in the benefits you are providing to your customers.

4. Read each question carefully and be concise and clear in your answers.

5. Presentation is important so ensure that your application is neat and free from grammatical errors. A typed submission always creates a better impression than a handwritten one.

6. Using your own branding and colours where appropriate can be a great way to create a memorable impression too.

7. When completing your submission answer all questions carefully and correctly. Reread the questions and your answers to ensure they correspond and think about the keywords the judges may be looking for.
8. It’s a good idea to have a few people read over your submission before sending it in, checking for grammar and spelling but also checking that your submission accurately tells the story of your business and what makes you unique.

9. Give yourself as many chances for success as possible – you’re able to nominate your business in up to 3 categories so choose which ones will apply to you best, we recommend entering at least one of the People’s Choice categories as these will also give your business exposure when voting begins.

10. Ensure you answer the question ‘Why do you think you should win this award?’ differently for each category you’re nominated in.

Don’t be disheartened if you don’t make it through, the process and opportunity to reflect will strengthen your business and help you to be more prepared for next time.
Nominations for the 2011 Bio-Oil AusMumpreneur Awards close next Friday 17 June. Voting in People’s choice categories will begin in early July and finalists will also be announced in early July.

Cyclone Yasi Charity Auction

For Katy & I the last 2 weeks have been incredibly difficult. Our community has been hit by one of the largest cyclones Australia has ever seen. The picture above shows you what happened at the small seaside community of Tully Heads when Cyclone Yasi came through. This is the street where one of our gorgeous friends and her family's house is. They've now lost their home and everything in it and all of their neighbours have lost their homes too. A whole community has been torn apart.

Some of our readers know Carolyn and have spoken to her online at connect2mums, she was the photographer who did a photoshoot at the beach with Katy & I for our feature in LittleOne Baby magazine in September of last year and she regularly attends Live Chat whenever she can. She is a beautiful person with 2 bright young boys, who is now 'homeless' and uncertain as to what the future will hold for her and her family.
I could not let this opportunity for us to help Carolyn in her greatest hour of need go by. And I hope you will all join me in helping her and her family on their road to recovery.
We are holding a charity auction to raise funds for Carolyn and other families whose homes have been destroyed by Cyclone Yasi. All funds raised by connect2mums will be distributed by registered non-profit organisation Mothers Helping Others Inc. (which was set up specifically to help cyclone recovery in the Cassowary Coast). We will call for donations of items this week (12 - 19 Feb) and then the charity auction will run the following week (20 - 26 Feb) the auction will be held at the 'Connect to Aussie mums' fan page

Flood appeal - why cash donations are preferred

One of our members, Tanya Love, is out helping at a donation centre in Brisbane today and has sent this photo through, here is her message:

"This is what the donation centres out here are dealing with! It is only one of MANY piles in this one centre alone. It DELAYS the support reaching the affected people. PLEASE sort and label your donations & don't donate rubbish! They are throwing away as much stuff as they are distributing. These people DO NOT need stuffed toys and broken crockery, nor do they deserve it!! If you are donating, please do so thoughtfully, these families' hearts are broken, they don't deserve broken stuff too!"

Please, if you're donating things only send good quality or near new items and sort and label everything. If you're yet to donate and deciding on whether to send things or a cash donation, please send money, that way people can buy the things that they need from local businesses in the flood affected regions who are also doing it tough right now.

Helping children recover emotionally following disaster

From personal experience following Cyclone Larry I know that many children will take time to recover emotionally following the floods this year. There are lots of ways to help your kids through this and I thought I'd share a few here, please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below too.

Here are some ways you can help your children to get back on track in the days and weeks following the event:

1. Talk about what happened, try to be calm and honest about what has happened and what will be happening in the clean up stage and beyond.

2. Allowing children the opportunity to tell their story is really important and helps a lot in the long term recovery. Depending on your child's age this can be through drawing pictures, writing stories, poetry or simply telling their story.

3. Encourage children to play. children use play to help them better understand their world and their own emotions. Catherine Oehlman of Squigglemum.com has written a post about flood play here, and we're supporting the Playgroup Queensland 'Keep kids playing' appeal.

4. Focus on the positive, talk about all the wonderful people helping others, the great work done by the emergency services etc. think of ways your child can be involved in helping too where appropriate, as this can be very healing. Limit negative exposure where possible be especially conscious of the TV news.

5. Find opportunities to socialise with others, being with other kids can be a great way for children to relax and leave their worries behind, its also very important for mums too!

6. Be aware that children whose homes weren't directly affected may still be traumatised by the event. It can be very confronting to see your community in distress. Ensure that these children are given the opportunity to express their emotions too and that their story and experience is as valid as anyone else's.

7. Children pick up on adults reactions - trust your judgment on this one, as its important to be honest and to show them that its ok to be upset but at the same time if you're stressed about insurance claims, financial problems etc they don't really need to know all the ins and outs, just try to be sensitive.

8. It can take several months before things return to normal particularly where homes have been damaged - this is difficult for everyone,

9. Ensure that your emotional needs are met too and that you are looking after yourself, take some time out and accept offers of help from friends and family - if you feel good you're much more capable of looking after your family well. You might find that you are quite resilient and strong for the first week or so and then begin feeling sad and grieving later, allow yourself time to heal.

10. If your child continues to be anxious, fearful or depressed after some time, seek help.

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this tragedy, especially the mums we're here for you if you need us.

Ten ways you can help in the disaster aftermath

If you're in SE Qld and feeling helpless here are some things that you might be able to do to help your local community get back on track in the days, weeks and months following this disaster.

(Please ensure that you and your home are Ok and its safe for you to go first though):

1. Volunteer to help out at the evacuation centres, they'll need people to help with things like preparing food and ensuring everyone is ok physically and emotionally

2. If you're in a street or suburb which has been effected ensure your neighbours are OK - especially elderly people

3. Prepare meals for friends and neighbours who's homes, businesses or properties have been effected - this will be an extremely stressful time for many people

4. Offer to do washing for friends and neighbours without power

5. Give people a ring - it can do so much to boost people's spirits to know that you are thinking of them

6. Offer to mind children of friends and neighbours who have been affected

7. Contact local charity organizations such as red cross, vinnies lifeline, rotary and see if they need help

8. Get in touch with local schools, childcare centres, kindys etc that you are involved with and offer to help

9. In the weeks ahead spend some extra time socialising with friends or family who have been involved, people are often very resilient in the first few days and may have delayed shock until several weeks later

10. Don't be afraid to ask for help yourself - even if your own property was undamaged seeing your community devastated can be an emotional experience and you need to ensure you are OK too

It can take 12 months - 2 years to fully recover emotionally from a large scale event such as this, our thoughts are with all of you, stay strong.
